Obsolete and Outdated technologies

  • I will say that we are living in a day and age which is very current and up to date.
  • Obsolete and Outdated technologies have no value in this age.
  • How did I come to know of this?
  •  I came to know about it through hard way which is called life and experience.
  • First case I would like to highlight is my Thread Ceremony Video cassette (VHS) from 1992. I became busy with my life and forgot all about it. I should have converted it to CD and DVD when I had the chance but it did not. I sat on it and thought of converting it to CD/DVD only occurred to me in 2011 i.e. after 19 years. I gave the VCR (yes we still had it) and the Cassette at a place in my native town of Bhubaneswar. He kept the VCR which was still working but he could not convert the VHS. Next I tried in Berhampur but he could not do it. Then I brought it to Bengaluru and gave it at two places but they could not do it. next I sent it to Scan Corner @Hyderabad and they could not do it. Subsequently now I have sent it to Delhi and still am hoping that it could be converted to digital video.
  • Second is when I have uploaded the CD/DVD of my marriage to Youtube after converting it to MP4. If VHS tapes can afford not to function it can very easily happen to CD/DVDs also. they can get corrupted quite easily. During that time also I have found one DVD from my marriage which is not working. I mean I can see the files but when I try to play or copy they just don't work.
  • Third was when I bought LED TV and that too a 42 inch TV. It was upgrading from a 29 inch box or Cathode Ray TV. At that time I came to know that old cable connection does not look good in LED TV and at that time I took Videocon HD Box when my Cable Tv just never gave a HD box because he never offered it. LED/LCD TV's are built for HD connection and vice-versa i.e. HD connection are built for LED and LCD TV. There was no looking back.
  • Fourth was when I tried to get rid of my 17 year old bike which was Kawasaki Bajaj 4S Champion. I had bought it for 50000 INR in November 1999. I tried to sell it @19000 INR in October 2001 but my father said why sell it at so less price. So I held on to it and the thought of selling it never came to me until 2015 when 15 year validity of the vehicle had passed in 2014. But since the bike was at Mumbai and I was at Bengaluru that never happened. But in 2016 I got the time and went to Mumbai and tried to sell it for 5000 INR but no one was willing to give that to me. Finally i sold it as scrap for 1200 INR. That person who bought it as scrap said, "Do you think it has value? It may have value for you but for a prospective purchaser it has no value. It has no value not even parts have a value. Tell me. Do you see such a vehicle on the road? If you don't see one where will the parts be used?"
  • Fifth case deals with mobile. I visit the website of Flipkart and Amazon and try to exchange my mobile. I had a mobile of Micromax which was Canvas 4 plus A315. It cost 14000 INR after discount and its glass cracked twice and then I spent 4500 and 4000 rupees twice for it but it fell again withing a week and I had to scrap it. Before scrapping it I tried to look for its resale value and I could come to the figure of Rs 2500 in cashify.in website. But if the glass is cracked then it is scrap value. Similarly about two years back I found the resale value of Nokia Lumia 610 to be Rs1000. That phone cost me 12000 and I have spent 2000 further. Now if we look at resale value of Lumia 610 it is 0. Nowhere it is available. I had bought Samsung galaxy tab GT P1000 and now if I try to exchange it, no one will pay a single rupee for it.
  • Sixth is the connection we take for TV like Tata Sky or Netflix for example. We have to pay money either monthly or annually and then we are "guaranteed service and protection". We cannot say that two years ago we paid 15000 and so we are the customer. We are paying for the service for a "time sequence" and we are eligible only for that time.
  • Seventh we can say what happened to demonetisation and old notes were outdated by Modi and BJP and they got in new notes. probably their inspiration was also this theory that outdated and obsolete things have no value. New notes will give new infusion to the economy.
  • Eighth was when my desktop computer crashed and I had to change the motherboard. What the Computer Engineer said that this motherboard is no longer available in the market as it is obsolete and you have to change the set i.e. the motherboard and the processor together. I had no option and opted for it and now I have i3 Processor along with Gigabyte motherboard. Hard disk can still be used with the new set.
  • Ninth is through watching Wrestling on TV. Shows like TNA Impact, Smackdown and RAW. We realise that only the latest episodes have value. I mean we can watch Pay-per-views if we miss some but the weekly shows are best enjoyed if the are watched in the current week if not live. A little bit late and they lose the value.
  • Tenth is the Top 40 countdown. We realise that in India the foreign music channels like VH1, 9XO show all old music videos occasionally few are new not to mention Music Videos are edited/censored. Earlier Channel V International was there and their countdown used to be shown in Star World in weekend but they stopped it I think in 2007 or 2008. And then Rage program used to be shown in Australia Network in weekeend but then Australia Network also shut down and now Australia Plus Channel in new Avatar does not show Rage anymore and so I had to scour other sources like http://top40-charts.com/ for Top 40 songs. Current songs matter and not earlier ones when you want the latest.
So what we can conclude that in this day and age, nothing is permanent and outdated technology and equipment lose their value and we should get rid of them while they still have the value. If we continue to hold on to the old things and items, we may not get warranty, guarantee as well as replacement if they have any problem.
I am reminded of TNA Wrestling's Jeff and Matt Hardy song "I will fade away and classify myself as obsolete...obsolete."
Holding on to Old items is like doing illegal activity. We know that it is illegal to drive a vehicle which is beyond 15 years old if we have not got the fitness certificate from the Govt RTO Department.
Technology companies, automobile companies will also not support the old products and very likely they will end as scrap.
It is a very harsh reality that when we begin our association with a product like a phone or bike or car we believe it will last forever but the fact is it may not be so. Our time with it is limited. And we will face the harsh reality when its useful life nears it end. That is not our attitude when we begin after association with it.
In the end I would like to mention from the Calvin Harris/Ne-Yo song "Lets Go" "It’s not about what you’ve done, It’s about what you doing, It’s all about where you going, No matter where you’ve been"

Lion, La La Land, Mission Impossible Rogue Nation

Watched three movies as mentioned in the subject line.
---------------------------------------------------------------------
Lion
This movie was watched on PVR Cinemas after booking through Bookmyshow.com where voucher was offered which gave a discount of Rs 125 (BMS125). This movie is great and since it is a foreign movie it does not show Indian Gods and Godesses and rather romaticises the subcontinent and "cuts to the chase" where it shows sparsely populated region of India (not Calcutta) from where the boy hails in the movie.
---------------------------------------------------------------------
La La Land
This movie was watched @Garuda Mall, Magrath Road after booking through Bookmyshow.com where voucher was offered which gave a discount of Rs 125 (BMS125). Movie is great but it is too sad that the hero and heroine go separate ways and the fact that could be different is also shown.
---------------------------------------------------------------------
Mission Impossible Rogue Nation
This movie was watched on Amazon Prime Video. I liked the movie. It deals with a shadow organization called The Syndicate which carries out wanton acts of terror and destruction around the world and it is taken down by Ethan Hunt and his team. While watching the movie you feel that because he is Ethan hunt he can do it what he does in the movie. Anybody else could not have done it.

Logan

Mobiles I have used (Part 3)

In continuation of two earlier blogs as below:
http://anup20161.blogspot.in/2017/02/mobiles-phone-i-have-used.html
http://anup20161.blogspot.in/2017/03/mobiles-i-have-used-part-2.html
This is the third blog post about the mobiles I have used:
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Mobile 9
Ninth mobile I have used was Nokia C2-03
This was the first Dual SIM mobile I used.
This was also the first Touch Screen. Actually this had both touch screen and keypad through sliding function.
Mobile was very basic one. I will say Nokia 6030 was also better than this for display and Internet. But anyway it gave exposure to another phone over the period of use. I bought it from Ebay in September 2011 and is still being used and is in working condition. It is not used full time but still can be used. Mainly my wife uses this when we visit our Native Place for BSNL which she has pre-marriage.
Current Status:
Mobile is still there with me and can be used.
Money spent for acquiring it: About INR 4000.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Mobile 10
Tenth Mobile I used was Nokia Lumia 610.
This was truly the First "Touch Screen" I used as Tablet was huge and difficulty carrying around. But this had 3.5 inch display and could be carried in pocket and was like a boon to me.
The day I ordered this phone from Ebay, the same day I dropped the Nokia N82 in recycling box at Koramangala. And that was August 2012.
Mobile is still working and I can use it but now I have got used to Dual SIM phone as I have two connections one of Airtel and other of Aircel and I need both online.
This mobile only drawback is RAM which is of 512 MB which makes it slow.
Current Status:
Mobile is still there with me and can be used.
Money spent for acquiring it: About INR 13000. Then new battery has been bought and when display was not working it was put. So additional costs of 2000. So combined costs are 15000.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Mobile 11
Eleventh phone I used was Micromax Canvas 4 plus A315.
This phone was bought from Ezone store online when ICICI Bank gave me a discount voucher.
This phone was too good and I liked it. With RAM of 1GB it was quite fast. I bought in December 2014 and used it well till August 2015 when its display simply cracked. I got it repaired at Micromax store at Mumbai spending INR 4500 and was using it when in October 2016 when again its display cracked. For a few months this phone lied in cold storage and in February 2017 I got the display repaired once more at Micromax store at Bangalore by spending INR 4000. But not more than a week had passed by when the display broke once more when it simply fell down from the table.
This has been the biggest loss making phone.
I took it to Micromax store and though they had told that 1 month guarantee is there, when they saw the visible crack they told again 4000 had to be spent and then I decided to get rid of the phone by dropping it at Recycle Box at Micromax store.
Current Status:
Mobile is dropped at Micromax Store Recycle Box as scrap. Not with me anymore.
Money spent for acquiring it: About INR 14000. Then new display was put @Mumbai which cost about INR 4500. And again INR 4000. So additional costs of say 9000. So combined costs are 23000.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Mobile 12
The twelfth mobile I used was Intex Aqua 3G

This mobile was bought in response to Micromax Canvas 4+ mobile glass cracking. I saw the ad on TV that this mobile was tough and tough mobile was what i wanted. And tough mobile was what I got. This mobile only drawback is RAM which is of 512 MB which makes it slow.Otherwise it is as good as any Smartphone. And I was very happy with this phone which prompted me to go for Intex Cloud Tread which is my latest phone now.
I bought it in August 2015 and has been used in between all along.
Current Status:
Mobile is still with me and can be used anytime.
Money spent for acquiring it: About INR3500. Very good value for money.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Mobile 13
This mobile was Samsung Galaxy On7
When my Micromax mobile faced problem first during August 2015, I initially went for Intex Aqua 3G but somehow in the back of my mind was the desire to buy a good phone from a "famous" company. And since Nokia was out of business, I went for Samsung as I was pretty much happy with Samsung Galaxy GT-P1000 tab which I had bought. So I shortlisted the phones and one which fit my budget was Galaxy On7.
It was bought in January 2016 and now my wife is using this. But initially I was using it and had given the Micromax Canvas 4+ to my wife. When the Canvas 4+ has charging issues, I took it back and gave the Galaxy On7 to my wife after which she is using it till date.
I bought it from Flipkart and cost 12000.
Current Status:
Mobile is still with me and my wife is using this.
Money spent for acquiring it: About INR 12000. Very good value for money.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Mobile 14
This is my current phone which is Intex Cloud Tread.

I am very happy with this phone and was bought when there was catastrophic failure of Micromax Canvas 4+ A315. Inspite of spending Rs 4000 and new display, the display cracked when it slipped from the table and not more than a week had passed. So I dropped Micromax phone at their Center's phone recycle box and ordered this phone Intex Cloud Tread froam Amazon.
This is very fast phone and the entire phone cost me 4000.
Current Status:
Mobile is still with me and is my current phone.
Money spent for acquiring it: About INR 4000. Very good value for money.
Intex is too good a brand. And after using Intex Aqua 3G I was confident that this phone will too work very well and so far it is not a disappointment at all.
I would like to thank Intex for giving a very good phone and Amazon for providing a platform to procure it and get me delivered.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Finally I would like to place a figure and all the phones have cost me INR 1,25,000 over the years since 2005 when I first bought a phone. I am regularly using mobile since 2004. Over the last 12 years Rs 125000 have been spent over phones. And this is not including the running costs which includes the Network costs paid to Mobile Operators and Wi Fi.

Mobiles I have Used (Part 2)

In continuation of earlier posts I made as below:
http://anup20161.blogspot.in/2017/02/mobiles-phone-i-have-used.html
I will like to proceed and go ahead of the first four mobiles I outlined.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Mobile 5
Fifth Mobile I used was Nokia 6030
This was ordered from Ebay.
I had started online ordering at this Stage and had ordered Playstation 2, T-Series DVD Player and a few other items online.
This was okay phone but no camera. I used 2G network in this phone to some extent and images used to load kind of okay (not videos). For this phone the RAM does not matter.
I used it full time from April 2007 till March 2008.
Current Status:
This phone was kept with me for sometime. I stopped using it when I got Nokia N82 and later I recollect there was some display problem and later it probably ended up as scrap and not in my possession anymore.
Money Spent on Phone for Acquisition : INR 5000 approximately.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Mobile 6
Sixth Mobile I used was Nokia N82
This was an excellent phone.A very big display and videos used to load very fine.
The Camera in the phone was also excellent and was one of the best at that time which was 5 Mega Pixels.
I ordered it in March 2008 and I used it till December 2010 without any issues when I gave it to my wife. She used it from December 2010 till August 2011 when there was some display issue and I put new display in October 2011 and used it till August 2012 when I dropped it in a Mobile Recycling box at Koramangala. At the time of dropping there were some problem and mobile used to abruptly turn off. For this phone the RAM does not matter. It was working fine and never bothered for the RAM.
Current Status:
This phone was dropped at a Mobile recycling Point at Koramangala in August 2012. So ended as scrap.
Money Spent on Phone for Acquisition : INR 15000 approximately. And then to fit LCD in 2011 I spent INR 3000 and new battery INR 2000. So total is 20000 INR
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Mobile 7
Seventh mobile I bought was actually not a mobile but a Tablet, Tab to say for short.
The model was Samsung Galaxy Tab GT-P1000
This one I bought after seeing the Screen size at the website http://www.gsmarena.com
I bought this for my use and gave the Nokia N82 to my wife.
Screen size was huge and that is 7 inches.
This one I bought from a supplier using my Corporate privileges. I was working with Wipro and there was a reseller in their Intranet and I bought it from him. Initially the price was INR 36000 but during the course of purchase the price dropped to INR 30000 and the benefit was passed to me. It could not have been passed to me in case I had bought from a shop outside.
This mobile only drawback is RAM which is of 512 MB which makes it slow.
And videos loading were huge in size. And there was no FM radio in this phone so that enabled that I could use TuneinRadio, Sky.FM radio (now radio tunes) and Saavn Music for the first time.
This I have used full time from December 2010 till date. Sometimes it is in cold storage but it is still usable and now I am using to listen to Music or watch Netflix. Amazon Prime Video is not downloading as this is old device. Also we can watch Netflix through Streaming but cannot download the videos.
Current Status:
Still working and in possession and in use.
Money Spent on Phone for Acquisition : INR 30000 approximately.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Mobile 8
Eighth mobile I used was Nokia 1616
This was a very basic mobile and I bought it from a shop. Like I said I did not have FM radio in Galaxy Tab so I went ahead and bought this phone for FM radio only. This cost less than INR 1500. For this phone the RAM does not matter. I was using two phones concurrently this and galaxy Tab for about 6 months. This was bought in January 2011 and is being used intermittently from time to time.
Current Status :
Mobile is still in possession and in use.
Money Spent on Phone for Acquisition : INR 1500 approximately.
Final blog post will follow soon.

Hunterr, John Wick, Man on a Ledge, Yaara Silly Silly

Watched four movies as mentioned in the subject line.
-------------------------------------------------------------------
Hunterr
This movie was watched on Airtel Digital TV Miniplex HD CHannel after recording on Pen drive.
Movie is okay for a one time watch. I feel the movie is ahead of its time. And movies with big banner and stars skirt the real issues and what they really want is to be like movies like Hunterr. Unfortunately box office does not give its due to these type of movies.
-------------------------------------------------------------------
John Wick
This movie was watched on Netflix. Yes people Netflix made me an offer I could not refuse and that was 1 month free usage just like new users. So now till March 28 I can use Netflix without paying any money. This movie John Wick is a highly polished movie. Movie has got class else there would not have been a sequel. I liked the movie. I watched it after downloading it to my mobile.
 -------------------------------------------------------------------
Man on a Ledge
This movie was again watched on Netflix. Once more I downloaded and watched it. Movie is definitely okay for a one time watch. Though some impossible scenes are shown in the movie. One can still watch the movie.
-------------------------------------------------------------------
Yaara Silly Silly
This movie was watched on Airtel Digital TV Miniplex HD CHannel after recording on Pen drive. It is definitely okay for a one time watch but the fact is there is no happy ending in the movie like the hero and heroines don't meet in the end and lead their separate lives and the movie also acknowledges it. But we don't know what happens later. I mean this is the age of Facebook and Twitter and identities cannot be hidden forever or could it be?
